CVC short o words

Short o is a strong next step after students have practiced short a, short e, and short i. The word shape still stays simple, but the middle sound changes. Words like dog, log, and mop help learners listen for the vowel sound inside a three-sound word.

This lesson uses the same six short o words across the games and printable worksheet. Students see the picture, say the word, notice the highlighted o, and then read the full word again.

How to teach CVC short o words

Start with one picture card. Say the word naturally, then stretch the sounds: d-o-g, l-o-g, m-o-p. Ask the learner to tap the first sound, the middle sound, and the final sound. Then point to the red o and blend the word back together.

For a quick routine:

1. Look at the picture.
2. Say the word aloud.
3. Tap the three sounds.
4. Point to the short o.
5. Read the full word.
6. Match the picture and word.

Common short o mistakes

Short o can be confused with other short vowels when students rush through the middle sound. If a child reads mop as map, slow the task down and compare only the vowel. Keep the beginning and ending sounds the same, then ask which middle letter changed the word.

The highlighted vowel gives students a visual cue without changing the spacing of the word. They still see mop as one whole word, but the target sound is easy to notice.

Use flashcards first, play one picture matching game, and finish with one worksheet page. In a small group, ask each student to choose a card, say the word, and tell where the short o sound appears.
